October 2004 Newsletter
Niagara Falls Travel and Tourism Subject of October Meeting Our speaker this month is probably the best we have had in the past couple of years. Program Chairlady Katie Wolf has secured Samuel Ferraro as our speaker. Sam is the Commissioner of Planning, Development and Tourism for Niagara County and will be showing us all the new things planned in our area for the next few years. It is most important that we have a good turnout for this meeting. Please talk up this meeting with your fellow workers and people you do business with and let's show what a great association we are. Our dinner this month will be a full course BBQ rib/chicken dinner and will cost $20 inclusive. Reservations continue to be extremely important. Upon receipt of this bulletin, please call Jim or Jenny at the Builders Office (283-0557) to make your reservation. You can also fax us at 283-0733. Final date to reserve is Monday, October 11, 2004. 2005 International Builders Show Are you interested in attending a show along with 100,000 other building professionals or one with over 1600 exhibitors and 200 ground breaking educational seminars? Then you will want to attend NAHB's annual convention being held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida from January 13-16, 2005. Go to the show and learn how to do it right, do it better, and do it now. Also, NFL Hall of Famer and Emmy winning Sports Broadcaster Terry Bradshaw will delivery the Keynote Address for Opening Ceremonies. For further information, please call National Director Bill Burg at Alside Windows and Doors at 297-1118 or 870-1437. You can also contact Executive Officer Jim Fitz-Patrick at 283-0557. Our annual Christmas party will be held on Wednesday, December 8th, 2004 at Suzanne's Fine Dining located on Niagara Falls Blvd in Wheatfield. Stan and Lori Swogier have agreed to chair this again this year, however, they need your help in getting gifts for the auction baskets. Now is the time to contact your suppliers for monetary gifts or products that can be used for the auction. Lori is working on the final price and the menu for this fun evening. Please give her a call at 731-4240 and offer your assistance in helping make this party the greatest ever. Election As mentioned in last month's bulletin, our election of Officers and Board members takes place at the November meeting. President Stan Swogier will be selecting a nominating committee shortly to select the candidates that will be running in the election. Members of the Board whose terms expire December 31, 2004 are Carl Capolupo, Tom DiMatteo, Jim Mordeno and Brian Tomey, who are all eligible to run for the Board again for a two year term through December 31, 2006 or fill an Officer position if there are any openings. We must also fill the Board positions expiring December 31, 2005 formerly held by Doug Marcinski of Ryan Homes who was transferred by his company. Anyone interested in helping to run your association are asked to contact President Swogier at 731-4240 or Executive Officer Jim Fitz-Patrick at 283-0557. Welcome! We extend a warm welcome to our newest member, whose application for Builders Membership was approved at the Board meeting on September 8th. Approved was: Federmann Builders Inc. Why not give Andreas a call right now, while it is fresh in your mind to welcome him to our association and see how you and he can do business as members of the Niagara County Builders Association. OSHA Launches Safety Web Page for Residential Construction The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has launched a Web page containing information and tips specifically related to safety and health for workers in the residential construction industry. The Web site was created with guidance and assistance from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). OSHA's residential Construction Safety and Health Web page features information about OSHA standards that apply to residential construction as well as the hazards present in residential construction and solutions available to the industry. "This new OSHA Web page focuses on residential construction and industry-specific safety and health information that can help employers and workers establish and maintain safer worksites," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "Working with OSHA has given NAHB the opportunity to leverage our association's resources in order to maximize worker protections," said Bobby Rayburn, NAHB president and a home and apartment builder from Jackson, Miss. The OSHA residential construction safety Web pages were created as part of the OSHA-NAHB Alliance that was formed in May 2003. The site provides building industry professionals with information about electrical safety, fall protection, fire safety, hand and power tool safety, scaffolding, personal protective equipment, safety programs and more. It also features detailed information and links to OSHA enforcement and training information, including interpretation and compliance letters; OSHA inspections; OSHA Training Institute (OTI) and NAHB training information and safety publications available online.
